The CEO leaned back in his high-backed leather chair, steepled his fingers, and looked at the young man sitting across the mahogany desk. The office felt heavy with the scent of expensive cologne and success.

"Jack," the CEO began, his voice echoing slightly. "I’ve been watching you. When you walked through those doors a year ago, you were just a nervous intern grabbing coffee. Within three months, I made you an Associate. Three months after that, Manager. Then Senior Manager. I’ve fast-tracked you because I saw a spark in you that most people lack."

He paused for dramatic effect, sliding a gold fountain pen across a folder. "I’ve called you in today to tell you that I’m appointing you as our new Executive Vice President."

The CEO waited. He expected a speech, perhaps some tears of joy, or at least a stammering professional thank you.

The young man simply nodded and said, "Thanks."

The CEO’s smile twitched. "‘Thanks’? Jack, I’ve just handed you the keys to the kingdom. Is that really all you have to say for yourself?"

Jack shifted in his seat, looked out the window at the city skyline for a moment, and then turned back with a playful grin.

" Thanks, Dad."
